Card Brand Fees

Visa®, Mastercard®, Discover®, and American Express® assess fees when a debit or credit card transaction is passed from a merchant through the payment brand to the card issuer. These fees cover the cost to issuing banks for offering lines of credit and fraud mitigation and are also tied to the level of risk for that transaction; the lower the risk, the lower the rate will be. In addition to these fees, the payment brands may charge various assessment fees associated with the costs of managing their networks, the complexity of data being transmitted, the risks to the transactions, etc. Fulton Financial passes these card brand fees to our merchants to the best of our processing system capabilities. Understanding these fees can be complicated because the payment brands do not have one set rate that applies to every industry and/or every type of transaction. Additionally, rates are adjusted throughout the year. Due to these factors, you may at times see varying amounts reflected in this area of your merchant statement. The impact of these fees to your business is based on various factors including your pricing plan, type of business, card types commonly accepted, transaction amounts, and card acceptance channel (i.e. phone, e-commerce, in-person).

As of April 2023, the current industry dues and assessments are:

  • Visa Credit: 0.14%
  • Visa Debit: 0.13%
  • MasterCard transactions less than $1,000 and all debit transactions: 0.13%
  • MasterCard transactions greater than $1,000: 0.14%
  • Discover: 0.14%
  • American Express: 0.165%

These rates are subject to change from time to time. Visa and Mastercard Dues & Assessment are assessed an additional 0.02% on your monthly merchant statement. The American Express Dues & Assessment billed to your statement includes a processor sponsorship fee of 0.15%, Also, an additional $0.02 will be added to applicable per item Card Brand Fees listed below and $2.00 to the card present and card not present FANF fee items.
